Thanks for Being Part of our 20-week Winter Futsal Experience
We had a 23% increase in participation from the prior winter, with 297 kids of all ages playing weekly. That commitment meant 20 hours of weekend play at the Lawrence YWCA on the weekend. Director of Soccer Development, Chris, ensured opportunities for all ages, plus league play on Sundays. It motivated the staff to utilize all leftover shirts, ironing on numbers so kids get that “team” feel. Most of these experiences are led by former players like Donovan (pictured below). He shares, “I like to coach the kids because it reminds me of when I practiced back then with Beyond.” His consistent, positive, desire-to-learn attitude couldn’t be better for the kids or the mission.
What Is Futsal?
Futsal is a self-teaching game. It’s a modified version of soccer played with 5 players on a basketball-size court. Flying substitutions are used, and substitutions are unlimited. Unlike regular soccer, futsal is played on a hard-court with a heavier ball defined by lines…Read More!
Director of Soccer Development, Chris Marin, is committed to keeping kids moving, playing, and engaged at all ages. Winter & Summertime futsal is all about fun and fast footwork. Starting in early December, we will run all-day futsal programs on Saturdays & Sundays at the YWCA in Lawrence for kids of all ages and abilities.

About
For the first time in 10 years, hundreds of Beyond Soccer players were left without a place to participate in indoor futsal & fitness in the winter of 2018, and we vowed never to let that happen again. In 2019, we acted and leased 9,000 sq. ft. of indoor space at the former Malden Mills, our planned “Sports & Wellness Center” or “Lawrence Sports HUB” (HUB), with a growth potential of 70,000 ft2.
Pre-COVID, through initial friend ‘raising efforts, plus in-kind equipment, that space included a beautiful, multi-purpose playing surface with dashers, custom netting, and professional sports lines to accommodate futsal, basketball, and volleyball. As our first official pilot program, we launched an evening pickup futsal league in July 2019 at the HUB for 65 middle school youth, run entirely by our youth jobs cohort. In winter 2019, hundreds of kids played in partnership with Essex County Youth Futsal, which included players from other communities. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we had to close the space, which means our beautiful futsal court is in storage, waiting for a new location to build connections and get more kids to adopt healthy, active lifestyles! In the meantime, in the summer of 2021, we brought back futsal in a more street-soccer, pickup-style way. It’s fun and fast-paced, and we hope your child can join us this summer! See details above and below. Now we have run 4 very busy off-season futsal programs, and each season participation grows!
Partners
Before COVID-19, the HUB became the second site for the Essex County Youth Futsal League, which meant families, in addition to playing at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, started coming into Lawrence to play with our kids and offset costs. This mutually beneficial relationship was another way this new space is breaking down barriers between suburban and urban communities.
See the information above for futsal play. We are currently participating in ECYFL in winter 2022 with three (3) registered high school teams!
