• Our Spring Coach Mentors.... & growing

Our leadership model is built around creating real pathways for young people who grow up in our programs to step into leadership roles. Many begin as volunteer Junior Coaches, then move into paid roles as Summer Coach Mentors, and eventually become Coach Mentors for their own travel teams—just like nearly all of the coach mentors featured below.

Melissa Cartagena

Melissa has been involved with Beyond since essentially the beginning. She was a long-time travel player and has served in many leadership roles within the organization. Today, she’s the head coach of the Wolverines, our 8th-grade girls’ team, where she helps guide players during an important stage of their development. Melissa graduated from Abbott Academy with honors as a student-athlete and later earned her bachelor’s degree in Science and Nutrition from UMass Lowell.

Why I Coach: “I coach because it’s rewarding to see players grow and develop their love for the game. My own coaches inspired me to give back in the same way.”

As shared above, our on– and off-field leadership focus includes Junior Coach roles, which then lead to paid roles as Summer Coach Mentors and, eventually, Coach Mentor opportunities. This year-round approach to leadership development is especially visible during the summer months, a tradition that began more than 15 years ago with our first Soccer & Wellness Camp. The photo here shows a group of our 2025 Summer Coach Mentors getting ready at 6:30 a.m. for camp.

  • Jr Coach Mentors

Beyond Soccer participants can begin as early as age 12 as Junior Coach Mentors. This entry-level role is volunteer-based and includes additional service opportunities, along with a planned 4–6 week leadership development experience for middle school youth through age 14.

  • Last Summer

In summer 2025, 13 local teens were hired across our summer programs. In addition, 12 younger participants served as Junior Coach Mentors, the first step in our youth jobs pipeline and an early introduction to mentorship, teamwork, and personal growth.

  • What did they do?

From June 28 through August 19, they helped deliver a robust summer schedule across 34 program days, with 26 days featuring multiple program offerings. Altogether, we provided 202 hours of programming, supported by 2,490 hours of paid Coach Mentor time and 1,080 volunteer hours from Junior Coach Mentors.

  • Youth Wages

Across these roles, Beyond Soccer disbursed nearly $50,000 in summertime wages to youth workers, investing directly in young leaders from our community.
