STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Beyond Soccer’s Director of Soccer Programs, Edgar Escalante, started his journey with Beyond Soccer 7 years ago after graduating from Lawrence High School. Edgar is a native of Guatemala with an infectious love of soccer. He also coaches the LHS Boys Varsity Soccer Team.
“The best part is being able to make a difference in kids’ lives, helping them improve every day and making sure they are giving and getting the most out of our programs. One of the coolest things is that I really get to know all of the kids and develop true friendships with their families.”
“I receive phone calls from parents every day asking if their kids can join our teams. I want to help Beyond Soccer expand resources and volunteer staff so we can fulfill the needs of this community, because there are so many families who want their kids to be part of us and need financial assistance to do so.”
“If I had to pick one player who inspires me, it would be Kember. He has been playing with us since age 9. At the time (circa 2012), he was slightly overweight and not very skilled. He didn’t have a passion for sports and joined simply because his cousins signed up and didn’t want to feel left out. Since then, our programs have connected Kember to new people, places and opportunities that expanded his horizons, and now 3 ½ years later, cannot keep him off the soccer pitch. He now captains the U14 travel team and was also selected to play for a local, competitive club team, on scholarship, and most recently the Mass State Cup A-team, a recognition given to only a handful of skilled and dedicated players. Kember is on the right track, but most importantly, he is just as motivated in the classroom, a key focus of Beyond Soccer, which will open even more doors for him during his high school years. I look forward to continuing my important work with Kember.”
