Director of Soccer Development, Chris Marin, is committed to keeping kids moving, playing and engaged at all ages. Winter & Summertime futsal is all about fun and fast footwork. Starting in January, we will be running all-day futsal programs on Saturdays & Sundays at the YWCA in Lawrence for kids of all ages and abilities.
“Listen, you guys do a great job. I don’t want to see my little ones to be a lost generation. Thank you for getting my kids involved in an activity in the city of lawrence.”
“Having Summer Nights futsal sessions was my favorite part of my summer job experience because of seeing how into it the kids got, and how excited and happy they were to be on the court. Ending the day kicking around with your friends and playing the game we all love, there’s nothing better.”
“I never knew this park (futsal location) existed in Lawrence. It’s nice to see this space, that also runs along the Merrimack River, come alive with healthy activities, with a court full of young people, racing around. As a resident it makes me feel good and safe.”
For the first time in 10 years, hundreds of Beyond Soccer players were left without a place to participate in indoor futsal & fitness in winter 2018, and we vowed never to let that happen again. In 2019, we acted and leased 9,000 sq. ft. of indoor space at the former Malden Mills, our planned “Sports & Wellness Center” or “Lawrence Sports HUB” (HUB), with growth potential to 70,000 ft2.
Pre-COVID, through initial friend ‘raising efforts, plus in-kind equipment, space included a beautiful, multi-purpose playing surface, with dashers, custom netting, and professional sports lines to accommodate futsal, basketball, and volleyball. As our first official pilot program, we launched an evening pickup futsal league in July 2019 at the HUB for 65 middle school youth, run entirely by our youth jobs cohort. In winter 2019, we had hundreds of kids playing partnership with Essex County Youth Futsal, which included players from other Essex County communities. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we had to close the space, which means our beautiful futsal court is in storage, waiting for a new location to build connections and get more kids to adopt healthy, active lifestyles! In the meantime, in summer 2021, we want to bring back futsal in a more street-soccer, pickup style. It’s fun and fast-paced, and we hope your child can join us this summer! See details above and below.
Before COVID-19, the HUB became the second site for the Essex County Youth Futsal League, which meant families, in addition to playing at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, started coming into Lawrence to play with our kids and offset costs. This mutually beneficial relationship was another way this new space is breaking down barriers between suburban and urban communities.
See the information above for futsal play. We are currently participating in ECYFL in winter 2022 with three (3) registered high school teams!
